Minor Illness in children and School Attendance

Minor illness in children such as coughs, colds and runny noses is increasingly common during the Winter months, especially in children who attend nursery or school.

Most minor illnesses last a few days and can be easily managed at home. If you are unsure what type of illness your child has, or if they require additional treatment, its quick and easy to speak to your local pharmacist who can advise you further and suggest medicines that you can buy over the counter.  It is sometimes confusing knowing if your child should stay off school or if they are allowed to still attend school/nursery with their minor illness. Your school should have their sickness and absence policy on their website.

School may ask for medical evidence if your child has been off school for a prolonged period of time such as appointment or hospital letters. It is unnecessary to ask the GP for a letter or note to give to school as evidence if your child has been off with a minor illness.
